    Remove Temptation

Can you really look at that chunk of chocolate cheesecake in the fridge and hear it calling out your name without having a slice? If you're like me you can't.

The only way I can prevent myself indulging is to not have the stuff in the house in the first place, and that is what I would recommend to anyone who struggles with self control.

I don't know.  I think that can backfire, too.  Have you ever wanted a piece of something - anything - chocolate so badly that you've left your house after you're supposed to be in for the evening just to go get some from the store?  I have.  I've found that if I keep just a few bad for things around the house that are large enough to satisfy my cravings while still being too small to do any real damage that I don't end up going on a major binge as often. (Because while I'm at the store I'm bound to pick out several bad for me items.)

You are right about the willpower thing though.  I had to really pay close attention to the treats at the beginning so I didn't overdo it.  But I'm all trained now. Wink

I think I'm one of the lucky few that doesn't have a problem with temptation. I guess my brain is wired differently than most people because I just don't think about what I really want to eat. I just think about what's best for my health. But you're right... Most people seem to need a temptation free house in order to maintain their goals.

I find that if I don't have junk food in the house but I do have plenty of healthy snack items then it's not worth the effort to me to go out to get goodies.  It's when you have no snacks in the house at all that it's more tempting to go out. Also, don't go so radical that you have no junk food ever or you end up feeling deprived.  I try to buy fat free pretzels or baked potato chips when I go shopping.  When a get a bit of a snack craving, those types of items won't destroy my diet but still make me feel like I indulged.

I dont get a craving for chocolate, but I do get acraving sometimes for a cheeseburger, or a kebab =) I think that this year I will start cooking the things that I like and look for healthier ways of making them - low fat burgers would be a start, not too sure about home made kebabs though, I can but try..

Yes, I totally agree, if you not supposed to eat it, it should not be in your house.  I saw a new product on television the other day that was a lock that went on top of an ice cream container,  I am sure it will sell, but if you have the key,  well you see where I am going with this one.

Add me to the list of people who can't have it nearby otherwise it's eaten before you know it. I try my best to not buy junk food because I know I will eat it. And sometimes all in one sitting! But with kids it's hard not to buy ice cream or cookies or chips or whatever else they seem to crave. I try to get them to eat healthy too but it doesn't always go over well.

I think I disagree just a little with this. If you can't fight your temptations at home, what about when you leave the house. I mean I would not sit a candy bar next to you and see how long it lasts but I don't know if food-proofing your home is the way to go either. There will always be some temptations that you don't have control over so it may be better to be prepared for this instead of ignoring it.

Its easier for me to fight temptation outside of the home. If I have to hand over money for it, then that extra stage often slows me down. I cannot justify doing it, I know I shouldn't be doing so and it makes me think. Perfect distraction to stop me doing it.

    Re: Remove Temptation

I think my emotions can really drive me to overeat, sometimes. That's why I put myself in the right frame of mind after I eat to counter my tendency to over indulge. If I've eaten a regular meal but yearn for seconds, I remind myself I don't need more food.
