    Cholesterol and Diet

My aunt had her check-up very recently and her doctor said that her blood cholesterol is borderline normal. What dietary precautions should she take to maintain or lower her cholesterol level?

By the sounds of it, she is doing everything correctly.  If she has not been doing anything special thus far, then I wouldn't recommend changing her diet at all.  If she needs to lower her cholesterol slightly, she should add walking to her daily routine.  Walking helps to lower bad cholesterol and raise the good cholesterol levels.

    Cheerios?

I'm kidding. Actually, an increase in fiber intake can do wonders for cholesterol numbers.  I'm trying to remember what the dietician told my guy when he was having trouble with that.  It was something to the effect that fiber attracts fat and cholesterol to it like a magnet and takes it out of the body with it.

Or was that insoluble fiber?  I can't remember now.

The medics usually prescribe statins to lower cholesterol. If this has been the case, then make sure she also has CoEnzyme Q10 supplements as statins are now known to lower this essential substance in the body.

The amount and type of fat in her diet are the most important considerations. Reduce her total fat intake by 25 percent so that her body's major energy source will come from carbohydrate foods.

My mum has had high cholesterol all her life but she says it's a myth that's perpetrated by the manufactureres of statins, a little like the low fat myth, and that high cholesterol isn't bad for you.
