I'm really upset. My boyfriend is making it so hard for me to eat healthy. I'm trying really hard to cook more and eat meals that are better for me, but it's like he doesn't even care. He's told me that he supports me and then he suggests we order pizza or chinese...or he'll bring home fast food for us on his way home.
What should I do?
That's the worst, but I know how you feel, girl. My husband wasn't always supportive about eating right. Have you considered that you're boyfriend my not really understand how important this is to you? Try sitting down and talking to him about your reasons for wanting to eat right. He may just think you're trying to lose weight when he doesn't think you need to. If he understands your reasons then he might be be more supportive.
Unfortunately there are people who you just cannot change. If that is how he is, you might be stuck dealing with that, always.
You can only really change yourself, not those around you. Work on making your own resolve as strong as you can.
In all aspects of life we make our own decisions and our partners either agree, compromise or do their own thing. If he doesn't want to eat what you cook, then tell him he'd better only bring enough Pizza or takeaway for one and you'll make your own. Heck, my partner likes different food to me but I always manage to make a meal that suits us both. If you were vegetarian, you wouldn't eat meat just because he wants it would you?
Have you tried talking to him about how important this is to you and the reasons you are choosing the healthier lifestyle? He may just not have a clue. He also may be under the impression that the takeout he brings home isn't bad for you - I'm always surprised by the number of people who think Chinese food is healthy because of all the vegetables.
You bring up a great point, Jennalee. It's the same with fast food salads. My guy used to come home telling me how good he'd done that day because he had a salad from a fast food joint. I had to pull up the company's nutrition information on their website to convince him that salad was almost as bad as the burger he wanted.
How can you say that salad is as bad as a burger? The burger is surely full of saturated fat but I can't see where you would get that in a salad.
If you had a meat salad with strips of beef then you'd be eating the same saturated fat as in the burger wouldn't you? You wouldn't be eating the burger bun though. All in all I'd have to say that salads are better for you.
